Kathryn Heard

Jurisprudence & Social Policy

Kathryn Heard is a PhD candidate in the Jurisprudence and Social Policy Program with a Designated Emphasis in Critical Theory. Her dissertation interrogates the impact that discourses of “public reason” have on the political and metaphysical lives of religious individuals in late liberal states. By drawing heavily from both legal cases and political philosophy, she seeks to identify not only how “public reason” functions as a tool for creating secular subjects from religious individuals, but also how it may function – at crucial moments – as a tool for resistance and eventual emancipation from subjectification.
